Biblical Teachings on Prayer

Hey there! Let’s talk about prayer and learn from the Bible how important it is. We’ll look at some key scriptures and stories to understand prayer better.

What is Prayer?

Prayer is simply talking to God. It’s like having a conversation with your best friend. You can tell God about your day, ask for help, thank Him for good things, and say sorry when you’ve done something wrong.

Key Scriptures That Discuss Prayer

  1. Talking to God Anytime Scripture: “Pray continually.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Example: Just like you can talk to your parents anytime, you can talk to God anytime, anywhere, about anything.
  2. God Listens to Us Scripture: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” – 1 John 5:14 Example: Imagine you’re telling a friend about your problems and they really listen. God listens to us even more carefully.
  3. Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray Scripture: “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'” – Matthew 6:9-13 Example: Jesus gave us a model prayer, called the Lord’s Prayer, to show us how to talk to God. It includes praise, asking for what we need, saying sorry, and asking for help.

Examples of Prayer in the Bible

  1. Hannah’s Prayer Story: Hannah really wanted a baby and prayed to God with all her heart. She promised that if God gave her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord’s service. God answered her prayer, and she had a son named Samuel. Scripture: “In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly.” – 1 Samuel 1:10 Example: Just like Hannah, we can pray to God about our deepest desires and trust Him with our hearts.
  2. Daniel’s Prayer Story: Daniel prayed to God three times a day, even when it was against the law. He was thrown into a lions’ den for praying, but God protected him because he stayed faithful. Scriptural Reference: “Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” – Daniel 6:10 Example: Daniel’s story shows us the importance of praying regularly and trusting God, even in difficult times.
  3. Jesus Prays in the Garden Story: Before Jesus was arrested, He prayed in a garden called Gethsemane. He was very sad and troubled, but He asked God for strength to do what needed to be done. Scriptural Reference: “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.'” – Luke 22:41-42 Example: Jesus prayed when He was scared and sad, showing us that it’s okay to pray about our feelings and ask for God’s help.
